The Choral Masterworks of Historic Composer Samuel Gottschall

An Unabridged Collection, Recently Discovered, Transcribed, and Printed in its First Edition

HONOR OUR COMPOSERS

Few composers have composed music to Classical Hebrew texts. Fewer still have seen their works flourish. Neither the writing of songs nor the organization of choirs, especially mixed voice choirs, has been part of the tradition.

One might then ask how Samuel Gottschall, a composer of a veritable ocean of music, was able to thrive. It was helpful that he was born in Alba Julia to a wealthy family during the 18th century and that his father, Julius, and grandfather, Alzariah were composers. Also he lived to be 92 years of age.

The family had risen from humble blacksmiths to take on fancy ironwork for the nobility and eventually become armorers for war which led to wealth. Born into these circumstances and under the influence of grandfather Alzariah, who had studied music in Cremona, Samuel, a musical prodigy, was to become the most outstanding – perhaps only – composer to Hebrew texts between Solomone Rossi and the beginning of the Reform movement in the 1830’s.

As an adolescent Gottschall was sent for musical and religious studies to Vienna where he remained for eighteen years. In Vienna in the 1730’s and 1740’s he was exposed to the very latest currents in music. This was the period during which the fully developed Baroque and its successor the Rococo gave way to the Classical style. Gottschall returned to his home in Transylvania prepared to assume responsibilities as cantor and performer.

Samuel Gottschall had a wonderful tenor voice and was in demand both as a performer and teacher. In addition to Classical Hebrew, he taught the performance of Byzantine Liturgy in the Greco-Catholic Theological School in Blaj. The home in which he lived still stands in Cluj. His many compositions were performed by his students at school, and also in the public spaces every town and village provided for this purpose. Additionally his compositions circulated widely in manuscript.

A descendant of Gottschall makes the following statement:
“Later on in life he lived a very isolated life, moved to the city of Cluj, where he was teaching music and Latin in a theological school across the street from his house in Piazza Carolina #5. At the age of 92 he came home in 1811, late December, from travel with his carriage. There was no snow whatsoever, but his servant who drove him home forgot about checking on him from time to time, and when they arrived at the house the servant opened the carriage and called him in the dark, and he didn’t answer. He touched him on the legs and discovered that he was frozen – a very skinny, tall man at 92 was dead from the cold that later on would freeze the army of Napoleon too.“

An Epic Discovery Uncovers Timeless Compositions

Music is the most powerful form of communication in the world. It unites the masses and injects joy and harmony into our daily experiences. The lost works of Samuel Gottschall are now available for religious enthusiasts everywhere to enjoy and learn from.
